Introduction
Dragon Warrior Monsters, some of you may (and probably will) remember the
name Dragon Warrior, because it was a series for the NES, and a popular one at that. In this game Edios and Enix
put a spin on the game, and they turn it into a very interesting Pokemon like RPG, where the possibilities are
endless. The Game starts out with you having your sister taken away by an evil monster named Warabou, and you being
taken to save her by a good monster name Watabou. In the beginning the story seems simple like you can beat it
in no time, but soon after you will learn there's a lot more then expected in this game. Some really fun features
of this game are the breeding feature, the link cable feature that lets you battle friends and breed monsters with
them, though you can not trade, there is a feature in battle that lets you give a monster to the loser, it is an
option, and if you plan who will win and lose twice you can in a way trade.
Gameplay
The game is an ordinary GBC RPG, moving up and down freely from a bird's
eye view. Instead of catching monsters in Pokeball, or in a container you have to feed them to get them to like
you, and if they like you they'll join you.(when you throw meat you'll see music notes around the monsters). In
battle you don't see your own monsters, but only the enemies, and your monster's special attacks. Monsters learn
more special attacks by leveling up against other monsters, and other Monster Masters monster. Every monster has
HP and MP, MP is used to perform the special attacks, it also goes up as you walk, while HP is the monster's life.
You don't battle with your self, but there are certain items you could use to give damage to the opponent monsters.
It may seem complicated, but over all it's not. To travel, catch, and battle monsters, you must go in what is called
a traveler gate. Each travel gate depending on how hard it is has levels, there are warp holes that take you to
each level. There are between 3-29 levels, depending on difficulty.
Controls
The controls aren't that good, but when you get used to them they're fine....to pause the game and look at your
monsters stats you use the A button, and it's also used to select things, while the B button cancels. A can also
talk to people by walking up to them and pressing it. Start changes the way you look at your monsters stats in
the main screen, it changes to level of the monsters to the monsters remaining HP and MP. Select lets you look
at the map in certain areas of the game.
Graphics
For a GBC game, in my opinion the color and graphics of the game are pretty good. A bright variation of colors,
that amuse any eye. The scenery is creative, colorful, and friendly to the viewer, but after a while it will get
dull. Over all the graphics are very easy to see, making it gamer friendly.
Sound & Music
The music on this game has got to be one of my all time favorites. A lot of different melodies to keep your ear
listening through out the game. In the Great Tree, or in Tournament you're bound to be keeping your ears open hoping
for more. Though the monster don't make noise, there is still the battle tunes to listen to.
Final Comments
Over all I happened to love the game, and really hope for a continuation
of it, and as some of you may know there will be a DW 1 and 2 coming in one cartridge to America in late 2000 early-mid
2001. The game is definitely one that will keep you busy for days, and even after you "think" you beat
the game, there's still more to come, with challenges that may seem impossible.
Over all DWM gets a 4 out of 5, because some of the controls may seem strange to those who are used to playing
games like Pokemon. The music, and the graphics both make up for the controls. I definitely recommend this game
for gamers between the ages 8 and up, because of all the reading involved. |
