Summary
Gameplay

I was really excited when I bought this game. Firstly because the graphics from the screen shots looked really amazing and seemed to make good use of the Color GameBoy's new graphic abilities. Secondly, because Montezumas Revenge was one of my favorite games ten years ago when I played it constantly on the C=64.

In the game, you are a treasure hunting hero on a grueling trek through seven dangerous pyramids. You will start at the very top and every level you descend in the pyramid gets more difficult since there are more and more rooms. Often, rooms that you find are locked and you will have to search for the key if you hope to enter. In your way are many snakes, spiders and other enemies which have to be avoided or defeated. To get a better picture of what's happening, you can switch to an overview of the pyramid, so you'll always know where you are.

The graphics are nice, but its a bit hard to control your adventurer. For example, if you want to go up a ladder, you'll have to find the exact spot in front of it or you can't get up. There are also some bad level designs in the game that fool you into thinking that you can jump to a certain place but actually can't. You'll find this out when you discover that you are mysteriously held back from jumping by an invisible barrier. Also, you can't direct your character in the air, thus you can only make "far" jumps. This makes the game harder and not to mention, frustrating to control.

Sadly, there is no battery save and the game can only be continued with a password. Also, the music (at least to my taste) was really awful. It was so bad that I played the whole game with the music turned off. Sound
effects are okay, but I must admit, they were better on the C=64 especially with the "La Cucaracha"sound.

Verdict To be honest I was a little disappointed with Motezuma's Return. Not because it is a bad game, but because it did not live up to my expectations, especially after having played it on the C=64.

All in all, Motezuma's Return on the Color GameBoy could have been better. The programmers should have taken a little more time to tweak the controls and correct some of the level designs. But if you like games that allow you to explore and do a little running and jumping, then Montezuma's Return should be on your list of 'Must-Haves'.
