track and fieldI don't know about you, but as far as I am concerned, I have always adored "multi-event" sport games. Guess this started back in 1983 with Decathlon on the Atari VCS 2600. Five years later my favorites have been the Summer and Winter Games from Epyx on the C=64 and nowadays its "Track & Field" from Konami for the GameBoy. This game is rather old (1992) but it's still is so much fun and it's much better than (in my opinion) new but bad multi-event games like e.g. "Nagano Winter Olympics" on the Playstation. Track & Field is a real all-time classic. There are 11 events to choose from:

  • 100m Dash
  • Long Jump
  • Hammer Throw
  • 110m Hurdles
  • Javelin Throw
  • Weight Lifting
  • Archery
  • Triple Jump
  • Swimming
  • Discus Throw
  • Pole Vault

track and fieldOK, most events are really similar, just press A or B and push the button at the right time, but that's not all. At games like the 100m Dash it's just your speed that counts. There are also such "speed" related events that additionally need dexterity and precision because you have to push the buttons for jumping at the right time.

track and fieldOn the other hand there are also totally different events like Archery where you have to calculate how strong the wind is blowing and from which direction it is coming from. For this, you have to be really careful if you want to get high scores.

So you see, there are similar events but some are really different.

Verdict A real all-time classic. This game is to my taste. If you don't have it yet, you're missing something in my opinion (unless you really hate multi-event games). Unfortunately, your high scores are not saved, but that's the only drawback I have noticed. Back in 1992, it wasn't common to put batteries into games just to save high scores. These days, games like Kirby's Star Stacker or Tetris Plus have no such problems.
