After
receiving an N64 with Goldeneye as a Christmas present last year, I just couldn't get enough of it. I heard of
a game coming out later called "JAMES BOND 007" and decided to make the purchase. I must admit, 007 is
not all I expected, but it proved to be a worthwhile purchase and a pretty good game.
If you're expecting a hand-held version of Goldeneye, then you won't find it here. This game is more like Link's
Awakening than Zelda. Only a few things hampered the gameplay, but it was partly due to the machine's physical
limitations. For example, having to hit 'select' to switch between key and machete and block and night-vision got
a little tedious. This was because the Game Boy only has A and B buttons. Also, you must be exactly lined up with
doorways or paths to walk through. Sometimes this is confusing. In the caves, for example, Bond can walk around
some stones but not around others, so I found myself struggling for five minutes to get out.
The sound is very good, and the Bond theme is excellent. Also, the SFX of the punching is mediocre, but nonetheless
adds to the Bond experience. The graphics are great, and push the limits of the four-color system as much as they
can without breaking.
This game has an excellent learning curve, as I became familiar with its nuances after about fifteen minutes. However,
the replay value is pretty much zip after you've beaten the game, unless you did not get the M.A.R.B.L.E. the first
time. (However, the change is minimal. The only extra thing that happens is at the end, but I won't spoil it for
you.) The game is like Zelda: as soon as it is beaten, there is really no need to beat it again. |
