Summary
Gameplay

donkey kongIn This Donkey Kong (like all others) you have a team of two chimpanzees. This time it is Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong.

The storyline of the game is that K.rool have kidnapped Donkey Kong and it is up to Diddy and Dixie to save him.

Along the way you can collect bananas, these are like coins in super Mario land. You collect a hundred and you get a extra life. There are also coins to collect and also krem coins. There are places you can go to help you. These are:

  • Kong college - here you can save your progress, this is where the coins come in (one save costs 2 coins).
  • Funky flights - this place allows you to move from island to island (this costs 2 coins, unless you have already completed the island).

One thing I liked about this game is that you can change into different animals (along with their powers). There are a few of these, they are:

  • Rambi the rhino - his power is fairly obvious, he can just kill things
  • by running into them. (I think he was also in snes versions of Donkey Kong).
  • Squitter the spider - he can spin webs so you can stand on.
  • Squawks the parrot - squawks can fly, and can also shoot out eggs from his mouth to kill its enemies.
  • Rattly the rattlesnake - I am not sure what rattly can do as unfortunately I have never found him/her.
  • Enguarde the swordfish - can swim around very fast and fill his enemies that he runs into (only head on though).
Verdict No offence to anyone that likes this game, but I found it very boring. And some of the levels were based on luck the fist time round. ( e.g. on one level it is like a roller coaster and there are doors in the way, sometimes open, sometimes shut).

In order to get through safely there is a switch just before the door, which you have decided whether or not to hit the switch to either open or close the door.

I didn't like the fact that you HAD to do the levels in order. (Meaning that if you were stuck on a level then you were stuck on the entire game, whereas if you could do any level in any order then you could come back to the level later, and hope that you had gotten good enough to complete it.

One thing I did like about the game was the way that you were able to change into characters and you could use their "skills", this bit I found quite fun.

I would not recommend this to anyone… but maybe people who love Donkey Kong may like the game. I found Donkey Kong on the snes fun… that is why I went out and bought the gameboy version… but after playing it, it did not seem as good as the one on the snes.

The graphics on this game have apparently been optimised for the GameBoy. This may be true but I have not noticed much difference… maybe it is just me… or maybe everyone else can see the difference.
